Round 2 Feature Match: Brandon Geren vs. Evoltile Westside

The next coverage match is set between Brandon Geren (RobotBowtie) and Evoltile Westside (GreigaBeastDS)!

The match begins with a Rock, Paper, Scissors game, and after a pair of ties, Evoltile emerges triumphant, seizing the opportunity of going first!

Brandon is playing Scraps in this tournament, while his opponent Evoltile is playing Rabbit! Surprisingly enough, he is the only Rabbit player in the tournament. Will he succeed and bring Rabbit to the top?

Game 1

Evoltile privately confides that his hand was a nightmare, but he boldly hides this fact from his opponent by Normal Summoning Reborn Tengu and setting a backrow.

Brandon opens his turn with Pot of Duality, revealing Reborn Tengu, Scrapyard, and Trap Dustshoot. He selects Scrapyard and activates it, searching his Deck for a Scrap Tuner, choosing Scrap Beast. Then he Normal Summons Thunder King Rai-Oh, sending it in to attack the Tengu. Evoltile Special Summons another copy of Tengu from his Deck. Brandon Sets a card, but in the End Phase, Evoltile activates his facedown Mystical Space Typhoon, destroying the Solemn Warning.

(Evoltile LP: 7800)

Evoltile Normal Summons another copy of Reborn Tengu, making it clearer what he meant by a bad hand. He Overlays the two Tengu to try and Xyz Summon Number 39: Utopia, but Brandon's Rai-Oh won't stand by and let that happen, and the Summon is negated! Evoltile passes play to his opponent, his field devoid of cards.

Brandon Normal Summons Scrap Beast, and direct attacks! Evoltile takes the hit with no reaction, and Brandon sets two cards in his backrow.

(Evoltile LP: 6200)

Evoltile Sets a monster and ends his turn.

Brandon sends Scrap Beast to attack the facedown Glow-Up Bulb. During the Damage Step, he flips Horn of the Phantom Beast, giving Beast an extra 800 ATK, as well as letting him draw a card when his monster crushes the budding plant.

Evoltile activates Heavy Storm. Brandon chains with Scapegoat, Special Summoning 4 Sheep Tokens to his field before the storm blows the cards away. Evoltile activates Foolish Burial, sending Tour Guide of the Underworld from his Deck. Brandon is at first amused by the odd move, but the amusement fades as Evoltile banishes Number 39 and Tour Guide from his Graveyard to Special Summon the Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning! Evoltile Normal Summons Spore, and with a swift slash of its sword, Black Luster Soldier clears away Scrap Beast and a Sheep token, Spore following the lead and destroying a second token.

(Brandon LP: 6600)

Brandon Normal Summons Scrap Chimera, but Evoltile swiftly discards Effect Veiler from his hand, negating the Effect! Brandon ends his turn, sparing the Spore.

Evoltile draws, and the Black Luster Soldier cleaves the Chimera in two, taking out a token in addition. Spore tackles the last Sheep Token, leaving the opposing field barren of Monsters!

(Brandom LP: 5300)

Brandon Normal Summons another Scrap Chimera, and this time its effect goes through, Special Summoning Scrap Beast from the Graveyard. Without hesitation, he Synchs the two Level 4s into the mighty Scrap Dragon! He Sets a Scrapstorm and activates Scrap Dragon's effect, destroying both Black Luster Soldier and the Spell. He then attacks Spore and Sets another backrow.

(Evoltile LP: 3800)

Evoltile activates Dark Hole! As the dragon breaks apart from the force of the crushing force, Scrap Beast appears to defend its place thanks to Scrap Dragon's effect! Evoltile Normal Summons a Tour Guide, but a swift Solemn Warning puts an end to that dream. With no cards on the field or in his hand, Evoltile ends his turn.

(Brandon LP: 3300)

Brandon switches Scrap Beast to Attack Position and sends it in for a direct attack! He sets a card to the backrow.

(Evoltile LP: 2200)

Evoltile draws and Summons Kabazauls and destroys Scrap Beast. That's all he can do this round, so he ends his turn.

(Brandon LP: 3200)

Brandon is prepared with Thunder King Rai-Oh, and smashes Kabazauls. He ends his turn.

(Evoltile LP: 2000)

Evoltile passes without playing a card.

Brandon sends Rai-Oh in for a direct attack, dropping Evoltile to a lowly 100 LP.

Evoltile concedes after drawing, his hopes of winning that duel gone! Brandon emerges triumph, his Scraps proving to be far too resilient to stay down!

The duelists race to their Side Decks to prepare for the next match! Evoltile will be going first again!

Game 2

Evoltile Normal Summons Tour Guide and uses its effect to Special Summon Sangan from his Deck. He Overlays the two monsters to Xyz Summon Number 17: Leviathan Dragon! He detaches Sangan to give it 500 more ATK and sets a backrow.

Brandon activates Scrapyard, searching out a Scrap Beast from his Deck, and then activates Pot of Duality, revealing Doomcaliber Knight, another Pot of Duality, and Scrap Beast. He adds Doomcaliber Knight and Normal Summons it, activating Book of Moon to flip Number 17 into facedown Defense Position. He attacks, but Evoltile flips Mirror Force! Brandon ends his turn with a backrow.

Evoltile Flip Summons Number 17, but its ATK has been reset to 2000. He then Normal Summons Thunder King Rai-Oh and activates Monster Reborn for his Sangan. He Sets a backrow, but his attempted swarm of attacks are blocked by Scapegoat, leaving a lone Sheep Token alive after the assault.

Brandon Normal Summons his own Thunder King Rai-Oh and cuts Sangan down in a single strike. Thunder King's effect prevents the search effect of Sangan, and Brandon ends with a facedown card.

Evoltile draws and attacks Brandon's Thunder King with his Leviathan Dragon, and Rai-Oh destroys the last Sheep Token. During Main Phase 2, he Normal Summons Rescue Rabbit and uses its Effect, Special Summoning 2 Sabersaurus from his Deck. He Overlays both Sabersaurus for Evolzar Laggia!

Brandon is bemused, predicting that Evoltile's hand consisted of two Kabazauls. He activates Monster Reborn, targeting Thunder King Rai-Oh. Evoltile nods, and the Thunder King rams itself into Evoltile's own Thunder King, destroying them both. He sets a monster to end his turn.

Evoltile Normal Summons Kabazauls, to Brandon's amusement. He detaches the Tour Guide from Number 17, boosting it back to 2500. Number 17 destroys the facedown Scrap Beast, and his Kabazauls and Laggia hit directly.

(Brandon LP: 3800)

Brandon Sets a monster, but then concedes the duel! Evoltile's monsters kept his plays in check, and proved too much to wage a counterattack against! Brandon will be going first in Game 3!

Game 3

Brandon starts with Pot of Duality, revealing Reborn Tengu, Thunder King Rai-Oh, and Solemn Warning. He adds Rai-Oh, and Normal Summons Scap Beast and sets a card in his S/T zone.

Evoltile activates Mystical Space Typhoon, targeting Brandon's facedown card, but he chains Scrapstorm! By its effect, Brandon sends Scrap Chimera to the Graveyard, draws a card, and then destroys Scrap Beast! With Scrap Beast's effect, he adds Scrap Chimera to his hand! Evoltile Normal Summons Rescue Rabbit and activates its effect, but Brandon chains the Effect of Maxx "C" from his hand. Evoltile Special Summons 2 Sabersaurus from his deck, allowing Brandon to draw 1 card. He sends a Sabersaurus to direct attack, but Tragoedia emerges onto the field, with 3000 ATK! Evoltile Sets 2 backrow during Main Phase 2, and, dissuaded by the effect of Maxx "C", ends his turn. By the effect of Rescue Rabbit, the two Sabersaurus are destroyed.

(Brandon LP: 6100)
Tragoedia attacks directly, but Evoltile flips Mirror Force! In Main Phase 2, Brandon activates Scrapyard, adding Scrap Beast from his Deck. He Normal Summons Reborn Tengu and sets a backrow.

Evoltile only Sets another backrow and ends his turn.

Brandon Normal Summons Scrap Beast, and Synchs his Tengu and Scrap Beast for the feared Scrap Dragon. Evoltile hastily flips Solemn Warning, paying 2000 Life Points to negate its Summon! But his efforts are for naught, as another Reborn Tengu is Summoned from the Deck, and Scrap Dragon's Effect, due to its ruling, Special Summons Scrap Beast from the Graveyard! Brandon Synchs his second Tengu and Scrap Beast to Synchro Summon another Scrap Dragon! The last copy of Tengu is brought from the Deck, and they both attack Evoltile directly. Brandon ends with another backrow.

(Evoltile LP: 1500)

Evoltile Normal Summons Glow-Up Bulb, but after some deliberation, concedes the match! Brandon reveals his hand of 2 Thunder-King Rai-Oh and Scrap Chimera, and his Set Debunk and Book of Moon! There was almost nothing Evoltile could have done to get out of that bind!

Brandon's Scraps triumph 2-1 over Evoltile's Deck, after some tough fights and a few misplays.

Personal analysis: Because Evoltile had a Mirror Force to deal with the threat of Tragoedia, Overlaying for Evolzar Laggia or Evolzar Dolkka, or even something like Number 39 would probably have been a superior choice to simply letting the Sabersaurus die, even with the draw Brandon would have gained. He also misunderstood the Scrap Dragon ruling that let its effect activate regardless of whether it was successfully Summoned when destroyed.
