Top 8: Revenge Match! Brandon Geren vs. Zen Vikuda

The third Coverage Match of the Top 8 sees Brandon Geren and his Scrap Deck facing off against Zen Vikuda's HEROs! This match was recorded and then passed on to me for written coverage.

This isn't the first time we've seen these duelists square off before. They played against each other and swiss and Zen took home the win! Now it's Top 8. Will Zen come through on top once again, or will Brandon get his revenge?

Brandon wins the right to go first.

Brandon activates Pot of Duality, revealing two copies of Thunder King Rai-Oh and Scrap Beast. He chooses Scrap Beast and Normal Summons it before Setting 2 to the backrow.

Zen activates Mystical Space Typhoon, targeting Brandon's Scrapstorm, which is chained in response, targeting Scrap Beast. He sends Scrap Chimera from his Deck, draws a card, and destroys Beast with Scrapstorm's effect. Beast's effect then adds Chimera to Brandon's hand. Zen Normal Summons Elemental HERO Neos Alius, and attacks directly. He Sets 1 to the backrow.

(Brandon LP: 6100)

Brandon flips his own Mystical Space Typhoon, destroying Zen's Bottomless Trap Hole. He Normal Summons Scrap Chimera, and activates its effect to Special Summon Scrap Beast from his Graveyard! He then Synchs his two monsters for Scrap Dragon! He attacks Neos Alius and sets 1 to the backrow.

(Zen LP: 7100)

Zen Normal Summons another Neos Alius and activates Super Polymerization, discarding Neo-Spacian Grand Mole to fuse Neos Alius with Brandon's Scrap Dragon for Dragon Knight Draco-equiste! He attacks Brandon directly with this awesome monster! He sets the last card in hand to the backrow.

(Brandon LP: 2900)

Brandon activates Dark Hole, but Zen chains Forbidden Lance, weakening his Dragon Knight by 800 but making it immune to Spells and Traps this turn. He Normal Summons Scrap Chimera, Special Summoning Scrap Beast and Synching both for his second Scrap Dragon! He Sets Scrapyard and activates Scrap Dragon's effect to destroy Scrapyard and Dragon Knight. He attacks directly with Scrap Dragon.

(Zen LP: 4300)

Zen passes.

Brandon activates Monster Reborn for Dragon Knight Draco-equiste and both attack for game!

The quick Synchro power of the Scraps allow Brandon to crush everything Zen throws his way, and claim Game 1! Zen will go second in Game 2!

Game 2

Zen activates Pot of Duality, revealing Honest, Bottomless Trap Hole, and Solemn Warning. He adds Honest to his hand and Normal Summons Elemental HERO Stratos, activating its effect to add Elemental HERO Neos Alius to his hand. He Sets a backrow.

Brandon Normal Summons Thunder King Rai-Oh and attacks Stratos, but Zen flips Dimensional Prison, banishing Rai-Oh!

Zen sets a monster and attacks directly with Stratos.

(Brandon LP: 6200)

Brandon activates Scrapyard, searching Scrap Beast and Normal Summoning it. He attacks Zen's facedown monster, Snowman Eater. Its 1900 DEF means Brandon takes 300 damage, and Eater's effect destroys Scrap Beast. Brandon sets 1 to the backrow.

(Brandon LP: 5900)

Zen activates Mystical Space Typhoon, destroying Scrapstorm. He then activates Pot of Duality, revealing Solemn Warning, Dimensional Prison, and Elemental HERO Ocean. He adds Solemn Warning, and Normal Summons Neo-Spacian Grand Mole. Stratos hits directly. Due to some initial confusion involving Duality and attempting to Xyz Summon, Grand Mole does not attack, and Solemn Warning is never Set.

(Brandon LP: 4100)

Brandon Normal Summons Scrap Chimera, and activates its effect to Special Summon Scrap Beast. He Synchs both monsters for Scrap Dragon. He Sets a Solemn Warning and activates Dragon's effect to destroy Warning and Mole. Dragon attacks Stratos.

(Zen LP: 7000)

Zen activates Miracle Fusion, banishing Stratos and Grand Mole for Elemental HERO Gaia. When Gaia is Summoned, its effect halves Scrap Dragon's ATK and gains the same amount of ATK for the turn. Zen Normal Summons Elemental HERO Neos Alius. The combined ATK of his monsters is exactly enough to attack for game!

This time, Zen manages to hold the Scraps off long enough to prepare a killing blow! The third game decides it all, and Brandon will be going first!

Game 3

Brandon starts with Pot of Duality, revealing Dust Tornado, Scrapstorm, and Doomcaliber Knight. He chooses to add Scrapstorm to hand and Normal Summons Thunder King Rai-Oh and sets a backrow.

Zen activates Smashing Ground to destroy Rai-Oh. He then sets 2 backrow and a monster.

Brandon Normal Summons Scrap Beast, and Zen activates both Skill Drain and Bottomless Trap Hole. Brandon chains Scrapstorm from his hand, sending Scrap Chimera from his Deck, drawing a card, and destroying Scrap Beast. Beast's effect adds Chimera to his hand.

(Zen LP: 7000)

Zen sets a backrow.

Brandon Sets a backrow.

Zen passes. Brandon activates Dust Tornado, destroying Skill Drain.

Brandon Normal Summons Scrap Chimera, reviving Scrap Beast. Chimera attacks Zen's monster, which turns out to be D.D. Warrior Lady, which banishes both battling monsters. Scrap Beast attacks directly.

(Zen LP: 5400)

Zen Sets 2 backrow.

Brandon Normal Summons Reborn Tengu. He Synchs both monsters for Scrap Dragon, and Tengu's effect Special Summons another copy from the Deck. Both monsters attack directly, apparently unopposed.

(Zen LP: 900)

Zen Normal Summons Elemental HERO Neos Alius and flips Super Polymerization, discarding Miracle Fusion to fuse Alius with Scrap Dragon for Dragon Knight Draco-equiste!

Zen activates Dragon Knight's effect to banish a Dragon Synchro from the Graveyard and copy its effect for the turn. He chooses to banish Brandon's Scrap Dragon. However, Brandon objects, stating that Dragon Knight can only banish from the controller's Graveyard. This is actually incorrect: Draco-equiste can banish any Dragon Synchro from either player's Graveyard in the same way Leviair can Special Summon any player's banished monster. This did not affect the outcome, however.

Dragon Knight attacks Tengu, and Brandon Special Summons the third copy.

(Brandon LP: 6500)

Brandon activates Dark Hole, but Zen chains with Forbidden Lance. Brandon Normal Summons Scrap Chimera, Special Summoning Scrap Beast and Synching both monsters for Scrap Dragon. He Sets Scrapstorm and activates Dragon's effect to destroy Draco-equiste and Scrapstorm, then attacks directly for the match!

Scraps went head to head with HEROs and emerged from the fray with a record of 2-1! Good games!
